Needs Analysis

This page is here to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of the class I will be working with over the twenty hours of this placement, throughout the sessions I plan to develop thier range of passes and also increase cardiovascular fitness through game based activities. Justification for these two areas of rubgy is an analysis of the demands that rugby makes on young players has revealed that the basic skills and abilities a player needs are handling (catching and passing), running, kicking, a good sprint time and endurance (Guy et al., 1991; Hazeldine and McNab, 1991). From the information taken I believe that my choices of aims for the sessions have been justified as key areas of develping a young rugby player.

Through a meeting with the teacher currently in charge of the team I was able to assess the needs of the team and areas that he felt would most benefit the players, he also suggested ways in which I could do this. Through my training plan, sessions and coaching philosophy the aim is to increase the teams cardio vascular fitness as well as develop their range of passes through a variety of TGfU approaches. I believe that keeping the participants involved in games will give them a better idea of what is required of them for that session rather than just simple drills where some participants may get bored.

In order to assess what I have looked as so far with the group that I will be coaching I believed the best way to assess whether my coaching is successful would be to conduct a SWOT anaylsis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). SWOT analysis is an effective and simple planning technique which addresses one aspect of many strategic planning processes (Casebeer, 1993).
